Should taxpayers subsidize Citi Bike if it can’t turn a profit?

Citi Bike is being overhauled by its new owners, who say new software, equipment and bike stations are essential to eventually making the city’s celebrated bike-share program profitable. But it remains one of the few, if not the only, municipal bike-share programs not to receive an operating subsidy from taxpayers, although the city Department of Transportation provides lots of logistical support. Citi Bike’s new chief, Jay Walder, believes bike rentals, memberships and sponsorships will sustain the program and has no plans to seek a government subsidy—but doesn’t rule out the possibility.Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.
